SAAS-What is it?
Have you heard the new buzz term in data industry meaning Software as a Service. This refers to exactly what it says, purchasing software as a service as opposed to an off the shelf product. As we all know one of the first casualties of war in a down economy is corporate IT budgets. We often find that a large amount of dollars are wrapped up in Corporate IT budgets and as such when trimming excess is in order we look for ways in which we can do this in the fattiest of areas!
Often times particularly in a down economy we find that Software as Service can make a great deal of sense for businesses in a down economy.
A practical example of how SAAS works for a small business would be with the popular mail exchange program called Microsoft Exchange. Let's say you owned a company of 500 employees that uses an in house exchange server. You would have all the expenses of the hardware, software, CAL's, and ongoing support to manage and run the server to tack under your IT budget. Each Client Access License runs on average approximately $70 and as you grow you'll need a CAL for each new employee that you gain. This can easily be an annual expense of approximately $101,000 if you spend $10,000 in hardware, $16,000 in software, $35,000 in CALS and ongoing support salary of $40,000. However if you were to outsource this service at a monthly expense of $9.99 per Exchange account you would only spend $59,940 over the course of the year and as such you would save approximately $41,060.
The above is just one of the main types of solutions that ProLumen Consulting tries to creatively present to our clients on a daily basis.
